STOCKTON – The remains of perhaps eight American Indians have been unearthed from the south bank of the Stockton Deep Water Channel, stumbled upon by a backhoe operator late last year and removed in an archaeological dig that largely went unnoticed, officials said Friday.
The prehistoric bones were found during the removal of underground oil pipes installed in the early 1900s. A backhoe operator was moving dirt when he “noticed a skull rolling down the side of the stockpile, and work immediately ceased,” said Kitty Walker, city brownfields manager. full story
