On Friday an area community broke ground on a new center that will celebrate Native American culture and history. There was a special ceremony held at the new site located on M-22 in Peshawbestown. The new Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Museum and Cultural Center will include galleries, archives, a museum store and classrooms. Project leaders say the new center will be a great addition to the community. “It means that we’re bringing our language back so other people can know it.” says Mikki Pino, a member of the museum advisory board. “We’re bringing back our culture, our dancing, the dress, the regalia that we use. Not only will it show the local visitors that come through, but it shows our own families, our lost generations.” The center is set to open to the public in 2008. story
